After flak, BJP removes castes of leaders from website

By IANS,

Chandigarh : After facing flak over mentioning the castes of Dalit icon B.R. Ambedkar and social reformer Bal Gangadhar Tilak on its website, the Chandigarh unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Thursday altered the webpage.

Sanjay Tandon, president of Chandigarh BJP, told IANS that they have removed the castes of the two leaders.

“Both Ambedkar and Tilak are big sources of inspiration for us. They have an incredible past and nobody can even think of denigrating their esteem. Some people were not happy over mentioning of their castes therefore we have made the changes on our website today,” Tandon told IANS Thursday.

The BJP’s website had said that Ambedkar belonged to the “untouchable Mahar” caste whereas Tilak was a “Chitpavan Brahmin”.

The Congress had criticized the saffron party for mentioning of castes of the two leaders.
