Sensex languishing in dull trade, broader markets nudge up

Mumbai : A benchmark index for Indian equities markets continued to rule dull Thursday, while broader markets managed moderate gains.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) which opened at 18,484.71 points, was ruling at 18,504.5 points, up 40.13 points or 0.22 percent from its previous close at 18,469.36 points.

The 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange was also flat at 5,539.7 points.

Broader markets were ruling slightly higher with the BSE midcap index up 0.38 percent and the BSE small cap index up 0.5 percent.

Among the top gainers at this time were consumer durables, energy and auto stocks, while power and FMCG scrips slipped.

The market breadth was positive with 1,420 stocks advancing, 1,009 on the decline and 125 remaining unchanged.

Asian markets were trading weak with expectations of further rate hike by the Chinese central bank tempering dampening sentiments.

The Chinese Shanghai composite index closed 0.31 percent up at 2,874.88 points, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was ruling flat at 23,306.6 points.

The Japanese stock exchange was closed on account of a holiday.
