Volunteers for Peace and Harmony programme launched

By IANS,

New Delhi: In order to create a network of good samaritans across the country, the National Foundation for Communal Harmony (NFCH) has launched a Volunteers for Peace and Harmony programme.

“This programme will provide a platform to volunteers and increase the outreach of the foundation and to join the noble cause being pursued by the NFCH,” a statement from the autonomous organisation said.

The objectives of the programme are to create a network of volunteers to act as facilitators and change agents for promoting social harmony when peace and social cohesion between communities is disturbed as well as during peaceful times for inclusive development.

The launch of ‘V for Peace-n-Harmony’ coincides with the 10th anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers (IYV) being celebrated by the UN.

The statement said that any Indian citizen who is 15 years and above with a minimum educational qualification of Class 10 can be a volunteer.

“To mark entry as a volunteer, a person is expected to coin a slogan or provide a constructive or creative idea for peace and harmony,” the statement said.

“A certificate or a volunteer card would be issued to the volunteers after an annual review of their work by the NFCH,” it added.

However, in the first phase, volunteers associated with the National Service Scheme (NSS), Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS), civil defence and students in schools, colleges and universities would be enrolled.

The NFCH was set up in 1992 as an autonomous body under the home ministry.

The foundation undertakes various extension activities for promoting peace and harmony and provides financial assistance to children affected by communal, caste, ethnic or terrorist violence.
