Kolkata : Nobel laureate Amartya Sen Thursday welcomed the initiatives taken by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to make the Presidency University here a centre of excellence.

“There are definitely reasons to welcome the moves. Presidency is such an eminent institution,” Sen told mediapersons on his arrival in the city.

The economist has been nominated adviser to the chairman of the mentor group formed for the university. Harvard University professor and historian Sugato Bose is the group chairman.

The Nobel laureate, however, said that he would not take any decision. “An advisor does not take decisions. Whatever issue emerges, on that he advises. My duty is to advice the chairman,” he said.
