Hyderabad : A lecturer who threw acid at a girl student for rejecting his marriage proposal was arrested Sunday from an Andhra Pradesh town, police said.
Ch. Damodaram, who teaches in a private college in Visakhapatnam, threw acid on K. Kalpana, 19, in Palasa town in Srikakulam district Friday.
Damodaram, who was absconding and had taken shelter at his friend’s house in Visakhapatnam, was arrested and brought to Palasa Sunday. He was produced before a magistrate, who asked police to produce him in the court Monday. The accused was later shifted to sub-jail.
Talking to reporters while in police custody, Damodaram said he threw acid on Kalpana, a final year B.Sc. student at a private college in Palasa, out of jealousy.
“I was afraid she will marry somebody else and I attacked her with acid so that she can’t marry any other person,” he said. He still loved her and wanted to marry her.
Damodaram claimed they were in love for four years but Kalpana’s parents were against their relationship and tried to separate them.
Kalpana’s condition, meanwhile, remained critical. She had received burns on face and body and was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Visakhapatnam.
