Pakistanis gear up for Independence Day

By IANS,

Islamabad : Notwithstanding the unending terror attacks and sectarian violence across their country, Pakistanis are eagerly waiting to celebrate independence day Sunday.

Shops and marketplaces were Saturday bustling with buyers, betraying no sign of the bleak political and economical scenario gripping Pakistan.

National flags, stickers, caps, T-shirts, badges and banners were sold in large numbers in towns and cities.

Some bakeries prepared special cakes to mark the occasion.

As the British ended their colonial rule by dividing India into two nations, Pakistan was born Aug 14, 1947. The shrunken India came up a day later.

According to media reports, Sunday will begin with special prayers in mosques seeking the unity and prosperity of Pakistan.

There will be a gun salute in Islamabad and at all major cities.

The national flag will be hoisted on government and private installations. The Quran will be recited.

But the flag hoisting ceremony will not be held in parliament. Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani will instead hoist the flag at the Convention Centre.
