Ranchi : A doctor couple was abducted in Lohardagga district of Jharkhand Thursday by suspected Maoist rebels.
“Dr. Amar and his wife Dr. Pratima were coming to Ranchi from Palamau district on Thursday morning by bus. They were abducted near Kuru block of Lohardagga district,” said R.K Mallik, spokespersons of Jharkhand police.
Around 30 to 40 people, suspected to be members of the outlawed Communist Party of India-Maoist, stopped the bus near Kuru block and asked the doctor at gunpoint to get down from the bus.
“The number of the people indicates that they were possibly Maoist rebels. Right now, we cannot firmly say if it was an act of Maoist rebels or other criminals,” said Mallik.
Kuru is about 90 km from here. The police launched an intensive combing operation to trace the couple.
Amit is a retired doctor of the Indian Army, practising along with his wife in Palamu district, one of the districts worst hit by Maoist violence.
