New Delhi : The Election Commission has asked the Punjab chief electoral officer to submit a report on the Director General of Police (DGP) who is alleged to have shown “biased behaviour” towards a certain political party.
According to a statement issued here Saturday, the poll panel asked that the report be submitted by Aug 25.
The commission said some political parties complained that a few state officials, including the DGP, showed biased behaviour towards a particular political party during an Aug 9 meeting. The DGP had held a meeting with political parties and other state election officials for holding elections in the state scheduled for next year.
“Some political parties had complained about certain state government officials and their biased behaviour, in particular about deployment of about 350 police security guards to certain individuals in Moga district with ulterior motive,” the statement said.
“It was also alleged that the DGP had made several visits in the recent past to Moga District with a view to nurturing it politically,” it added.
The commission also said that the complaint was also made against D.S. Guru, Principal Secretary to Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.
In the statement, the poll panel said his name “was specifically mentioned in the complaint submitted by political party representatives”.
The statement said he should be “kept under watch so that he is not able to influence any election-related official or process.”
