New Delhi : The government will commemorate the 150th year of the Police Act, a British-era legislation enacted in 1861 that governs the functions, duties and responsibilities of the police in India, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said here Friday.

“As you all know this is the 150th year of the passing of the Police Act,” Manmohan Singh reminded directors general and inspectors general of police who have gathered here for a two-day national conference.

“We should therefore, especially honour the valour and sacrifices of those who laid down their lives to protect their fellow citizens,” he said.

“We will commemorate the 150th year in a more befitting manner to pay our solemn and grateful tribute to the great services our police forces have rendered to the nation,” the prime minister added.

There have been calls for police reforms that include rewriting of the British India legislation to match India’s status as an independent nation and to update it to meet the world largest democracy’s present needs.
