Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has urged the union government to provide reservation to minorities especially Muslims in proportion to their population.
In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in this regard on Saturday she has stated that her government was committed to co-operate in bringing an amendment to the constitution if needed to make a provision for reservation to Muslims in proportion to their population.
In the letter the CM has stated that she firmly believed that to bring about a change in the condition of minorities especially Muslims, an increase in opportunities in the field of education, employment, including other sectors of life for their progress was need most. She further stated that in the Indian constitution foundation for opportunities to the people for all religions for their progress in life has been laid. Though religious minorities especially Muslims had huge population they were backward even after 64 years of independence. The Sachar Committee had also pointed out this facet in her report.
CM Mayawati also stated in the letter that after due consideration the Sachar Committee had given several suggestions for the welfare and betterment of minorities which included encouragement to educational opportunities, economic activities and proper participation in employment, improvement in life style of minority community people besides control and prevention of communalism and violence. Mayawati also requested the PM to give due consideration to the issue of utmost importance for the betterment of minorities especially Muslims on a priority basis
