Washington : US President Barack Obama Tuesday called Saudi Ambassador to the US in the wake of two men accused of trying to assassinate him, the White House said.
In his call to Ambassador Adel al-Jubeir, Obama said that the US believes this plot to be a “flagrant violation” of US and international law, reiterating the US commitment to meet its responsibilities to ensure the security of diplomats serving in the country, said the White House.
Obama underscored the close partnership between the US and Saudi Arabia, said the statement.
Two men were charged by the US Justice Department earlier the day for their alleged participation in a plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the US with explosives.
The two men are Manssor Arbabsiar, a 56-year-old naturalised US citizen holding both Iranian and US passports, and Gholam Shakuri, another Iranian. Both were charged with conspiracy to murder a foreign official, and conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction, among others, the Justice said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman rejected the US accusations, terming them as “incorrect” and ” prefabricated scenario,” the semi-official Fars news agency reported.
