Pakistani lawyers to continue court boycott

Islamabad : The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) has decided to continue the boycott of courts till the restoration of the pre-emergency judiciary in the country.

“The boycott will continue unless the real and constitutional judges of the Supreme Court and the High Courts return to resume their constitutional duties and functions,” the protesting lawyers said.

Lawyers in Pakistan have relentlessly been protesting the emergency by President Pervez Musharraf and proclamation of a Provisional Constitution Order (PCO) Nov 3.

At a meeting held here Tuesday, the angry lawyers decided that the strike and boycott of the subordinate courts would continue for at least an hour a day, according to Dawn News. The one-hour strike is the minimum call of the Pakistan Bar Council.

However, the provincial bar councils and bar associations were free to observe a strike for more than an hour if they decided to do so, the newspaper said.

Members of the district bar associations have been asked to look after the lawyers detained in jails in their areas.

Hundreds of lawyers were arrested after they raised strong protests against the “dictatorial rule and martial law in the guise of emergency rule”.
