Advani not in favour of right to recall MPs

By IANS,

Kolkata : Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani Friday disapproved of Team Anna’s proposal for right to recall of MPs but favoured electoral reforms, especially in respect of stopping the growing money power in elections.

“The right to recall has not been accepted by any country except one or two small countries where it may be possible to implement it properly, not in a huge country like India where it would lead to perpetual instability,” said the former deputy prime minister.

“I am in favour of electoral reforms and particularly in respect of the growing influence of money power in the elections,” Advani noted.

“Money power in elections is a matter of great concern and I would like the government to discuss it,” said Advani while addressing a media conference here.

If all candidates spending crores of rupees in elections are rejected by the voters, it will discourage them from overspending and would control election expenditure, anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare had said.

Earlier, Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi had said that the right to reject or recall non-performing MPs may not work in a large country like India.
