Impractical to bring CBI under Lokpal: CBI director

By IANS,

New Delhi : While the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Friday opined it was impractical to come under the Lokpal purview, Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal contended that the CBI itself wants to be “completely” within the ombudsman’s ambit.

“One of the draft bills for the Lokpal envisages giving the anti-corruption wing of CBI to Lokpal. Given the composite nature of CBI which is its intrinsic strength, I am of the view that such proposal is neither practical nor advisable,” CBI Director A.P. Singh told reporters here.

“In any effort to strengthen the mechanism to combat corruption, CBI must be an integral and independent component,” he said.

But Kejriwal contended otherwise.

“I have seen the proposal they (CBI) have submitted to the (parliamentary) standing committee and if I have understood it correctly they are in favour of CBI being made completely independent of the government and a part of Lokpal,” Kejriwal told a news channel.

“They are of the opinion that rather than merging the anti-corruption branch of CBI, the complete CBI should be brought under the purview of Lokpal. We have no problem with that,” Kejriwal said.
