Apex court admits plea against Varun Gandhi’s election

By IANS,

New Delhi : The Supreme Court Friday admitted a petition seeking the overturning of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Varun Gandhi’s election from the Pilibhit Lok Sabha constituency in 2009 on the ground that he delivered inflammatory speeches in the run-up to the polls.

An apex court bench of Justices Altamas Kabir and S.S. Nijjar admitted the appeal after senior counsel M.N. Krishnamani said that before and even after filing his nomination papers, Gandhi delivered speeches against the Muslim and Sikh communities.

Krishnamani also assailed a Allahabad High Court verdict rejecting a petition by one V.M. Singh challenging Gandhi’s election for delivering hate speeches.
