United Nations : UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has expressed his sadness about two attacks that killed at least 59 people in Afghanistan Tuesday, his spokesman said.
“The secretary-general is deeply saddened by today’s (Tuesday’s) attacks in Kabul and Mazar-i-Sharif, which resulted in the death and injury of dozens of Afghan civilians who had gathered to mourn on the occasion of the Tenth of Muharam,” Xinhua quoted the statement from Martin Nesirky as saying.
An attack by a suicide bomber Tuesday morning at a shrine near the Afghan presidential palace in Kabul, where hundreds had gathered to observe the annual Ashura mourning rite, caused the death of 55 people and injured more than 134 others.
In Mazar-i-Sharif, a city in northern Afghanistan, four people were killed and 20 others injured in another explosion.
“The secretary-general condemns in the strongest terms such indiscriminate attacks against civilians and extends his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and wounded,” the statement said.
