Srinagar: The situation in the Apple town became ugly when the supporters of factions of Hurriyat Conference on Friday clashed at Sopore town in north Kashmir, pelting stones and hurling ‘kangris’ at each other, sources told Agence India Press.

The supporters of the two factions clashed as Chairman of the Hurriyat led by Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, finished his address to a public meeting at Tarzoo in the town, witness told Agence India Press.

Mirwaiz’s supporters raised slogans in his favour which irked the supporters Hurriyat Chairman (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani; the area has large support for the Geelani.

The factions, initially, engaged in sloganeering but the situation turned ugly as they hurled kangris (traditional fire pots) and stones at each other, the witness said. Police came on the spot and chased away the two groups by resorting to baton charge, they said, adding that no one was hurt in the action.

Mirwaiz was safe in the incident, sources said. Further reports are awaited. (AIP NEWS)
