Maoists torch Odisha mobile phone towers’ equipment

By IANS,

Bhubaneswar: In separate incidents, the Maoists Saturday set ablaze equipment of as many as five mobile phone towers in Odisha’s Ganjam district, police said.

A group of rebels torched the battery room of two mobile towers in Gajalabadi village, while a separate group of guerrillas set afire battery rooms and other equipment of three mobile towers in Ashurabandh village.

While one cell phone tower belonged to state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd., the others were owned by private operators, inspector in charge of local police station Niranjan Behera told IANS.

The villages where the Maoists went on the rampage are located within 20 km from the Sorada police station.

In the leaflets left behind near the damaged towers, the Maoists said they wanted to register their protest against the killing last month of Mallojula Koteshwar Rao alias Kishenji, one of their top leaders.
