Islamabad : Pakistan is facing an acute electricity shortage this winter, with cities bearing 10 hours of power outages.
The electricity shortfall surged Saturday to over 40 percent for common consumers, hitting a new winter peak, Dawn reported.
Power generation went down to 8,500 MW while demand soared to 12,500 MW, leaving a 4,000 MW deficit.
Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani had constituted a high-powered committee in August to resolve the issue of unscheduled power outages in the country. However, it has been able to achieve little.
The country has witnessed protests over the lack of electricity.
In July, two people were killed and 30 injured in a pitched battle between police and locals who were upset over acute electricity shortage in a town in Punjab province.
