Egypt’s ruling military pardons nearly 2,000 detainees

Cairo : Egypt’s ruling military council has approved the release of a total of 1,959 people detained in military prisons, state media reported.

The move was approved by military council chief Hussein Tantawi, Xinhua reported.

“A total of 1,959 individuals, who had been imprisoned according to military court rules during the chaos that prevailed the country after the Jan 25 uprising, were released,” chief of the military court Adel Mursy was quoted as saying by the official MENA news agency.

The military took over power of the country since the ouster of president Hosni Mubarak in February 2011.
