Parliament again adjourned over Nandigram

New Delhi : For the second consecutive day, both houses of parliament were adjourned till noon Tuesday following disruption by a determined opposition over the violence in West Bengal’s Nandigram.

While the Rajya Sabha was adjourned immediately after it met, the pandemonium continued for 20 minutes in the Lok Sabha before Speaker Somnath Chatterjee was forced to adjourn proceedings.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members rushed to the well raising slogans against the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and were unmoved by Chatterjee’s requests to go back to their seats.

Some of the slogans were: “We will not allow any business unless a discussion is permitted”, “Shame on the murderers of democracy”, and “UPA is sleeping while Nandigram is weeping”.

Chatterjee’s plea that he would allow a discussion if it was properly formatted and that the question hour should be allowed fell on deaf ears.

In the din, even Parliamentary Affairs Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi suggested that a discussion could take place after a meeting of leaders of all political parties.

“I told you that a properly-worded motion could be allowed. You are not even interested. You are insisting on making it political, it has become a mockery of democracy. I strongly denounce it,” Chatterjee said.
