Iran accepts US offer of talks on Iraq

Tehran : Iran Tuesday said it has accepted Washington’s request for resumption of talks on Iraq and will open a dialogue with the US in the near future.

“Next round of Iran-US talks on Iraq will be held in the near future,” Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki told reporters here, state-run Irna news agency reported.

“The Swiss embassy in Iran has submitted a message from the US government to Iran for holding a new round of talks on Iraq,” the minister said.

Noting that Iran has responded positively to the US request, Mottaki stressed that the talks would be held within the framework of assisting the Iraqi people and the security situation in the war-torn country.

“The exact date of the next round of the talks will be announced later but it will be conducted anyway,” said the minister.

Iran and the US have already held three rounds of talks at ambassador level in Baghdad, so far without any tangible results.

The US is still accusing Iran of aiding insurgents in Iraq and, while denying the US charges, Tehran says that the only way for peace and stability to return to Iraq would be an immediate withdrawal of US forces.
