New Delhi : An elderly grocery shop owner was arrested here on charges of drug trafficking after contraband valued at Rs.5 million in the international market was seized from him, the police said Wednesday.

Vijay Gupta, 56, was arrested late Monday outside the Mata Chanan Devi Hospital in Janakpuri area of west Delhi. The police claimed they recovered from him five kg marijuana worth Rs. five million kept in a jute bag.

“Gupta, who runs a grocery shop in Dwarka area, was arrested on a tip-off that he would come to supply drugs near the hospital,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Madhup Tewari.

“Gupta in his interrogation revealed that he had come to the city six years ago and since then was supplying drugs to the slum dwellers around his shop. He was obtaining the drug consignment from Nepal to sell here,” Tewari added.

The police officer said Gupta, a science graduate from Bhagalpur University, was earlier arrested in 2006 on similar charges.
