Cricket board talks to Vengsarkar to resolve column issue

New Delhi : The Indian cricket board is talking to chairman of selectors Dilip Vengsarkar to persuade him to stop writing his newspaper column, a top official said Thursday.

“The board is talking to Vengsarkar in an effort to resolve the issue,” Rajeev Shukla, a vice-president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), told IANS.

BCCI wants Vengsarkar, a former India captain, to stop writing his newspaper column as it is in conflict with his job as chairman of the senior selection panel.

Shukla, however, denied that a show-cause notice was issued to Vengsarkar.

Vengsarkar continues to write his column despite the board asking him not to do so.

The board had also done away with the practice of the chairman of selectors briefing the media after the team selection and the selectors have been told not to interact with the media, though many Pakistani players are writing columns for Indian newspapers.

The Indian board is apparently not concerned about the visiting captains and players using the Indian media to freely express their views. But from Team India, only the captain is allowed speak for the team and write a column.

Vengsarkar, as captain, was banned for writing a newspaper column in the 1980s while his West Indies counterpart Vivian Richards kept criticising the Indian umpires in his syndicated column.
