Dharamsala : Resume dialogue, suspend religious control regulations and free political prisoners in Tibet, a visiting parliamentary delegation from Italy said here Sunday.
“We call on the Chinese government to resume the dialogue with the Tibetan government-in-exile and to establish an open channel of communications with envoys of the Dalai Lama,” parliamentarian Gianni Vernetti told reporters here.
He said dialogue would help reaching a jointly-agreed solution that would enable the Tibetan community in China to enjoy genuine autonomy.
Vernetti was here along with a four-member parliamentary delegation to attend Saturday’s Tibetan National Uprising Day commemoration.
The parliamentarians called on the Chinese government to release all persons who have been arbitrarily detained and to allow journalists, foreign diplomats and international organisations unrestricted access to Tibet.
“Tibet has to be re-opened to the outside world,” Vernetti said urging the specialised agencies of the United Nations and in particular, the office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Human Rights Council to monitor respect for human rights in Tibet.
Vernetti was accompanied by Linda Lanzillotta, Jean Leonard Touadi and Alberto Losacco.
The Dalai Lama along with many of his supporters fled Tibet and took refuge in India when Chinese troops moved in and took control of Lhasa in 1959.
Some 140,000 Tibetans now live in exile, over 100,000 of them in different parts of India.
