Rome : Italy announced Wednesday that it was suspending all activities at its embassy in Syrian capital Damascus and has recalled its diplomatic staff.
In a statement, the Italian foreign ministry said Rome called back all its staff to condemn what it called the “unacceptable violence” by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Xinhua reported.
“Not least in consideration of the serious security risk, and in unison with its European Union partners, we reiterate the firmest condemnation of the unacceptable violence perpetrated by the Syrian regime against its citizens,” the statement said.
It said Italy will continue to support the Syrian people and work towards a peaceful solution to the crisis, ensuring people’s fundamental rights and legitimate democratic aspirations.
