Majority of Russians believe in Putin’s promises: Poll

By IANS/RIA Novosti,

Moscow : A majority of Russians consider president-elect Vladimir Putin’s lavish campaign promises trustworthy and reasonable, and hope he will fulfill at least part of them, says a poll by state-run pollster VTsIOM.

Putin’s promises of higher wages and benefits for state workers were a key element in the campaign that won him a third term in the Kremlin.

About one third of those polled — 37 percent — said they believe Putin would keep all of his promises, 41 percent expect that Putin will accomplish part of them and only 15 percent said the new president will fail to keep his words.

People expect that Putin will fulfill his promises on social policies, preservation of stability in the country and an increase in salaries of soldiers, doctors and teachers.

An overwhelming majority — 81 percent — called Putin’s pledge to revive Russia’s military domination important but only 50 percent believe this promise could be implemented by 2017-2020 as Putin said.

The survey was held with the participation of 1,600 people from 138 areas.
