Veteran freedom fighter Naikwadi is dead

Mumbai : Renowned freedom fighter and one of the pioneers of the co-operative movement Nagnath Anna Naikwadi passed away after a prolonged illness here Thursday, according to family sources. He was 92.

Nagnath Anna, as he was fondly known to his admirers, breathed his last at Lilavati Hospital, where he had been shifted from Miraj in Maharashtra.

Conferred the Padmashri and Maharashtra Bhushan honours, the freedom fighter had been ailing since over six months due to old age-related ailments.

He was involved with the Hutatma Kisan Ahir Co-operative Sugar Factory of which his son Vaibhav is the chairman, and Hutatma Complex in Sangli district of western Maharashtra.

Naikwadi was a close associate of several top personalities of the Indian freedom struggle, including the late Y.B. Chavan.
