Aligarh: In the wake of Thursday’s Supreme Court orders removing VC and Pro VC, a special meeting of the Executive Council of Aligarh Muslim University will be held on Monday (2nd April 2012) at 11:30 am at the India International Centre, New Delhi. AMU Registrar, Professor V. K. Abdul Jaleel on Saturday issued a notice to all members of the Executive Council requesting them to attend the meeting.
The Supreme Court on Thursday (29th March 2012) removed Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University Prof. Qazi Afzal Hussain and Pro Vice Chancellor Dr. Noor Mohammad from their posts with immediate effect. Both were appointed on the posts by the orders of a Division Bench of Allahabad High Court on 22nd March 2012, against which the AMU Registrar had filed Special Leave Petition in the apex court.
The SC also ordered that until permanent VC is appointed, the functioning of the University will be carried out by the Executive Council of AMU and Council’s orders would be implemented by the Registrar of the University.
The Executive Council is originally scheduled to meet on 12th April, 2012 to recommend to the University Court a panel of five names under Statute (2)(1) of the Statutes of the University for the appointment of the Vice Chancellor. The University Court will then consider the appropriate three names and would send them to the Visitor – President of India – who in turn would appoint one of them as VC.
Prof. Qazi Afzal Hussain was appointed VC after the interim order passed by the Division Bench of the Allahabad High Court on 22nd March 2012 and he assumed charge on 24th March 2012. Prof. Hussain had filed a Civil Misc. Writ Petition No.14164 of 2012 in the high court challenging a 15th March 2012 order of the AMU VC Dr. Noor Mohammad, a 1977 batch retired IAS officer. Dr. Noor Mohammad had taken over the charge of VC on 15th March 2012. The HC in its order on 22nd March installed Prof. Hussain as VC and Noor Mohammad as Pro VC.
Since Prof. PK Abdul Aziz left the post of VC after superannuation in January this year, many senior teachers have assumed the charge of VC following the constitution of the AMU.
