Jaipur : Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje asked the central government Tuesday to review its policy for the grant of import licenses for marble blocks.
In a letter to Minister for Commerce and Industry Kamal Nath, the chief minister said such licenses should not be confined to a few importers.
She said the policy should have been made broad-based to include all marble processors by stipulating suitable eligibility criteria based on investment, turnover and processing capacity.
Raje said that even the committee on petitions of the Lok Sabha in it 31st report presented on Aug 22 recommended framing of a new policy for the grant of import licenses for marble blocks.
“I request you to have a fresh look at the policy,” Raje said in the letter.
The marble import policy has hit the industry in Rajasthan.
About 63 percent of India’s marble resources is in Rajasthan and 91 percent of India’s marble is produced in the state.
Twenty of Rajasthan’s 32 districts produce marble. The state is also the most important centre of marble processing units.
