Out electoral system divisive: RSS chief

New Delhi : Criticising the electoral system in the country, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief K.S. Sudarshan Tuesday said it responsible for dividing Indian society on the basis of caste and religion.

“The present electoral system (in India) is against our basic nature. This is creating different castes and religions in the country,” Sudarshan said after releasing `Saffron Surge’, a book by Tarun Vijay, editor of the RSS mouthpiece Panchjanya.

“Where do we find ourselves after 60 years of independence?” he asked.

Speaking on the issue of status of minorities in the country, the RSS chief said that 99.9 percent of Muslims and Christians had not come from outside the country. “They belong here. So, why do they call themselves minorities?”

According to him, the concept of minorities was devised by the British during the colonial rule to divide Indian society.

He emphasised that Indian society is diverse but the western viewpoint tends to curb this diversity and sees it as homogeneous. “The western concept of equality cannot fit into the Indian social structure,” he said.

“The kind of competition introduced by the West in our society can only lead to hatred. The Indian ethos talks about cooperation, which leads to peaceful coexistence,” he said.

Sudarshan also called upon Hindus to “put forward their viewpoint with a strong conviction. No one listens to the weak”.

The book release function was also attended by former defence minister George Fernandes and former union minister Subramanyam Swamy. Both leaders have enjoyed a blow-hot, blow-cold relationship with the RSS over the past three decades.
