Patna : A Class 7 student was abducted at gunpoint in Bihar Wednesday, police officials said.
Unidentified criminals kidnapped Manish Kumar, a student of DAV School in Siwan, about 150 km from here, while the boy was on his way to school.
Police suspect the boy was abducted for ransom. His father is a brick kiln owner.
As soon as the news of the abduction spread, angry residents blocked roads to protest the crime.
Fear of abduction continues to haunt people in Bihar with kidnapping cases being reported regularly.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar last week claimed that the number of abductions had come down drastically during his rule. However, police records show otherwise.
Akash Pandey, 14, who was kidnapped while on his way to school in Patna on Aug 10, remains untraced.
Ankit, 6, was kidnapped on Apr 12 outside his school. Police suspect his abductors might have killed him. But Ankit’s parents do not accept the theory as the boy’s body is yet to be found.
“We still believe Ankit is alive,” his father said.
Nearly 5,000 people, including several children, were abducted last year. Over 2,210 people were kidnapped in the first half of 2007.
