Rescue Assamese Minorities: NRIs write to Chidambaram

By TCN News,

New Delhi: A group of Non Resident Indians (NRIs) has urged India’s Union Home Minister Mr. P Chidambaram to immediately intervene to stop killing of minorities in Assam.

“Muslims in this region are being harassed and forcible expulsion of Muslims is happening in the districts of Upper Assam. The situation here is to be seen to be believed. The lives and property of thousands of poor Muslim families belonging to the labor class in the Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Golaghat, Sivasagar, Jorhat districts are at stake with continuous torture meted out to them by various organizations, accusing them baselessly to be illegal Bangladeshi migrants,” said Pradeep Rajkumar, Secretary, Indo-Kuwait Friendship Society (IKFS) in a statement on Tuesday.

“As per the eyewitness and news media reports, there are more than 40,000 people have abandoned their homes and taken shelter in relief camps set up by the district administration. The situation remains tense and IKFS noticed that the communal violence in Assam has killed more than 100 people and forced thousands to flee their homes,” he further said and demanded Chidambaram’s immediate intervention.

“IKFS urges Your Excellency as in the capacity of World’s best democratic country’s Home Minister to highlight the plight of Muslims in Assam and to rehabilitate them and do whatever possible to stop ethnic cleansing in Assam,” he demanded.
