Fake electronic goods worth $1 mn seized in Dubai

Dubai : In one of the biggest crackdowns on fake electronic goods, the Department of Economic Development in Dubai has confiscated over 26,000 appliances worth four million dirhams (around $1 million).

The equipment were seized from a warehouse in Al Aweer area of Dubai. The warehouse was raided by officials from the Commercial Compliance and Consumer Protection division of the department.

The 26,000 appliances were fakes of popular electronic brands including LG, Panasonic, Sony, Sharp and Hitachi. They were carefully packed to avoid suspicion and even had warranty labels of leading distributors in the region.

The goods included 5,300 TV sets and 7,000 DVD players. Various other devices including stereo sets, irons and vacuum cleaners were found.

The confiscated goods will be destroyed and the owner will have to pay a fine of 30,000 dirhams (around $8,200), the maximum penalty for trademark infringement.
