Islamabad : The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) of radical Muslim leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman has decided to contest the Jan 8 elections on a separate ticket.

The JUI move has made evident the fissures in the religious alliance,Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), of which JUI is a unit. The coalition has been insisting on boycotting the elections.

Rehman Sunday informed the MMA about his desire to contest the elections separately, Liaquat Baloch of the MMA told Daily Times.

The last date to apply for an election symbol has passed and the JUI now needs a letter from the MMA allowing it to get a separate symbol.

Most of the MMA units, including Jamaat-e-Islami, have been opposing participation in the elections and are trying to convince the JUI to withdraw his candidates.

Rehman has, however, publicly said he is not in favour of boycotting the elections.
