Andhra minister’s son caught driving drunk

By IANS,

Hyderabad: Son of a cabinet minister in Andhra Pradesh was caught Saturday by police while driving his vehicle in an inebriated condition.

Krishna Reddy, son of Animal Husbandry minister P. Viswaroop, was stopped by the police in the posh Banajara Hills. Police said a breath analyzer test was done on him, which indicated that he was drunk while driving.

Banjara Hills police detained the Volvo car he was driving and registered a case. The police have summoned the minister’s son for counselling Monday.

According to police, if the reading of Blood Alcohol Content is found above the 30 mg per 100 ml blood, it is considered drunken driving.

The police don’t arrest the offenders but call them for counselling to educate them on the dangers of drunk driving. During the counselling, video films are shown on the repercussions of driving under the influence of alcohol. Later, the offenders are produced in court, which can impose a fine of up to Rs.3,000.

Under the drive against drunken driving launched in November last year, the police have so far registered 9,000 cases in the city.

A police officer said they planned to create a database of such drivers to keep a tab on habitual offenders, who face imprisonment and cancellation of driving licenses.
