Baghdad : The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) has said here some 50,000 Iraqi families had already been sent back home.
It will also launch a fresh assistance programme once the security situation improves in the country, it said in a release on Wednesday.
Upon request from the Iraqi government, the mission will also exert efforts to organise and implement a voluntary repatriation of Iraqi refugees, according to the release.
It put the current flow of Iraqi refugees and internally displaced persons at 40,000 and 10,000 respectively.
Although it is reluctant to repatriate Iraqi refugees due to the volatile security situation in Iraq, it has taken effective measures to shore up Iraqi authorities to answer the needs of those refugees and internally displaced persons.
For instance, helped by Iraqi authorities concerned, the UNAMI has laid an immediate response blueprint to help 5,000 families including nearly 30,000 persons, and to provide a package of emergency and relief aid to the needy families, it added.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and International Organisation for Migration will provide support for Iraqi authorities and UNAMI in preparations for initial contributions worth USD 11 million.
