Cable TV digitisation: Mumbai tops, Delhi lags

New Delhi : The government Wednesday said that 77 percent of cable TV digitisation has been achieved in the country’s four metros, with Mumbai topping the list.

The government has set an Oct 31 deadline for completing digitisation of cable TV in the four metros and December 2014 for the rest of the country.

Mumbai leads the metros with 99 percent digitisation process having been completed, followed by Kolkata at 73 percent, Delhi at 66 percent and Chennai at 59 percent, said a statement from the information and broadcasting ministry.

Taking into consideration the progress made by DTH in this sector, the level of digitization goes upto 84 percent in the four metros.

As per the census data 2011 released by the Office of Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India, the total households in Delhi are 3,341,000 with 88 percent TV penetration. Delhi has 2,939,000 TV households.

The information and broadcasting ministry has been monitoring the progress made towards digitization with all stakeholders regularly.

According to data provided by the Multi System Operators, 1,588,000 set top boxes have already been installed in Delhi.
