Court seeks police reply on plea of Verma’s wife

By IANS,

New Delhi : A special court here Wednesday sought a reply from police on a plea by businessman Abhishek Verma’s Romanian wife for a separate vehicle for commuting between jail and court due to alleged threat to her life from undertrials.

Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Special Judge Sanjeev Jain asked the deputy commissioner of the third battalion of Delhi Police to file a report by Oct 20 on Anca Maria Neacsu’s plea for protection.

The third battalion provides security to undertrials during their commuting between the Tihar Jail and courts.

Verma and his wife are accused in various cases dealing with corruption and forgery, and are in judicial custody till Oct 20 in a money laundering case.

Neacsu in her application told the court that she apprehended threat to her life from other jail inmates who travelled with her in prison van from and to court.

She said she had a threat from a woman arrested in connection with a Rs.5.25 crore heist and another undertrial.

Tihar Jail officials told the court that the woman accused involved in the heist had been shifted to another jail.

Another woman inmate had given an undertaking that she will not harm Anca, they said.

The CBI had alleged that Verma had written a letter in 2009 to the prime minister on a forged letterhead of then minister of state for home Ajay Maken, seeking easing of business visa norms.

Verma is also an accused in the 2006 naval war room leak case, in which classified documents were leaked from the directorate of naval operations.
