Shashank, Garvit in final of junior national tennis

New Delhi: Delhi boy Shashank Nautiyal snapped Prajwal Dev’s run to set up a title clash with Garvit Batra in the boys Under-16 singles of the Fenesta Open National Tennis Championships here Friday.

Shashank ousted Prajwal in a three-setter semifinal clash with a 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-1 win while Garvit moved into the final with another impressive performance against M. Sai Nikhil 7-5, 6-2 at the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association Complex.

In the girls Under-16 final Saturday, the top two seeds S. Snehadevi and Pranjalla Yadlapalli will be up against each other after both won in straight sets.

Snehadevi continued her good run with another authoritative performance as she powered her way into the title clash with a 6-1, 6-0 thrashing of Akshara Iska while Andhra girl Pranjalla got the better of Ramya Natarajan 6-4, 6-2.

In the boys Under-16 semifinal, Shashank did not have the best of starts after he was broken in the very first game of the match. But he broke Prajwal in the next game and got things under control in time. In spite of Prajwal making a comeback in the second set, Shashank did not cave in under pressure.

Prajwal looked tired in the decider and Shashank capitalised on it to break his opponent time-and-again before finally converting a break point in the seventh game to seal the match in his favour.

In the girls Under-14 singles, Maharashtra’s Mihika Yadav stunned top seed Sruta Gungunati from Andhra Pradesh 6-2, 6-1 to make it to the final where she will take on Delhi girl Vanshika Sawhney, who shut the door on Himani Mor 7-6(2), 6-4.

Alex Solanki squandered a 4-0 lead in the first set to lose the last four match 5-7, 4-6 to Sanil Jagtiani of West Begal in the boys under-14 singles category.

After a few initial hiccups, Sanil got the match under his control and dictated terms against Alex, who became more error prone with each passing game.

Sanil will take on top seed B.R. Nikshep in the final who defeated Paramweer Singh Bajwa 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinal clash.

In the doubles final, the boys Under-16 top seeds Vishu Prasad and Deepak Vishwakarma beat second seeds Tejas Kapoor and Raswant Ravi 6-3, 6-4.

In the girls Under-16 doubles final, second seeds Himani Mor and Vanshika Sawhney overcame Jhanvi Gupta and Vineeta Singh 6-2, 7-5.
