Agra : The Agra University students’ union elections scheduled for Saturday were cancelled Friday after the Allahabad High Court asked for a review while hearing a writ filed by a research student, listing irregularities in procedures followed.
Students groups had been protesting, and a series of demonstrations were held in the past two days, alleging violation of the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations by the university management.
Election officer Rajendra Sharma told media persons Friday evening that the whole exercise would now have to be conducted all over again. The new date of polling will be announced by vice chancellor D.N. Jouhar.
A student leader, Manoj Kumar, told IANS: “The whole exercise is faulty. The Agra University has more than 400 affiliated colleges spread from Noida to Lucknow, with an enrolment of around four lakh students. But only a few thousand students of the institutes of the university are participating in the exercise. How can they represent the entire university? Elections should also be held in the colleges too.”
Senior university teacher Dr Jitendra Raghvanshi said: “The elections have only been postponed. A new date will be announced soon.”
More than 40 students had filed their nominations, but a majority got rejected for one reason or the other. This arbitrary action had angered many students.
