Guwahati : Four suspected Maoist rebels have been arrested from Assam’s Dibrugarh district and arms, ammunition and incriminating documents seized from their possession, police said Sunday.
The four rebels, identified as Anup Hazarika, Ritul Das, Biraj Sutradhar and Dhiraj Dihingia were arrested in Chabua area Saturday night, police said on Sunday. A pistol, five rounds of live ammunition and incriminating documents were recovered from their possession, police said.
Dibrugarh Superintendent of Police Arabinda Kalita said the arrested rebels are being interrogated by police for more details about their activities.
Left-wing extremism (LWE) is a recent phenomenon in Assam and the state government had already claimed to have taken up steps to contain the Maoist activities before it is too late.
The state government has already identified several districts where the Maoist activities are growing and asked the deputy commissioners concerned to implement more developmental schemes in the areas.
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had also urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh earlier this year to include at least seven districts, which were identified as seeing Maoists activities, under the Integrated Action Plan (IAP) being implemented by the Planning Commission in at least 78 LWE-hit districts across the country.
