Hyderabad : Ethiopian athletes made a clean sweep of Jamba Cloud Hyderabad 10-km Run Sunday, winning men’s and women’s overall titles. Ethiopia’s Mosinet Geremew clocked his personal best time of 27.36 minutes to win the race at the People’s Plaza on the banks of Hussain Sagar Lake.
The 20-year-old, the fastest male athlete in the elite field, pushed to the second place the fancied Kenyan Nicholas Kipkemboi, who came here on the back of winning the Seven Hills Race in Netherlands.
Kipkemboi finished second with 27.37 while the third place went to Ugandan Jackson Kiprop (28.16)
Yebrgual Melese, also an Ethiopian, crossed the finish line in 33.21 to win the women’s overall title. Melese, who had finished fourth in the Delhi Half Marathon in September, pushed Kenyan Beatrice Mutai to second place (33.36). Olympian Sudha Singh of India came third with 35.18.
More than 8,500 people participated in the 10th edition of Hyderabad 10K Run. As many 2,500 took part in the 10km run while 6000 participate in the Mazza Run.
Celebrities, politicians and other eminent personalities from various walks of life were present to cheer the participants.
Union Minister for Tourism K. Chiranjeevi, Andhra Pradesh assembly Speaker Nadendla Manohar, Hyderabad Police Commissioner Anurag Sharma, tennis star Sania Mirza and former All-England badminton champion Pullela Gopichand were among those present.
“It was great to see the people of Hyderabad coming together in such large numbers to run. This run is not just about health and fitness, but also about supporting various causes Hyderabad believes in,” said Chiranjeevi.
