New Delhi : Extending support to the constitutional amendment bill for reservation in promotions, Communist Party of India-Marxist leader Sitaram Yechury Thursday, however, said the party would suggest amendments to the bill.

“We support the bill. Afterall, after so many years of Independence, there is not a single secretary to the government of India who is a Dalit,” Yechury told reporters.

“However, we will introduce an amendment to create a supernumerary post,” Yechury said.

The CPI-M leader said the supernumerary post would be of help when there were two candidates of the same qualification and one was a Dalit.

“In that case, the general category person can be given the supernumerary post,” he said.

The Rajya Sabha has resumed its debate on the the Constitution (117th Amendment) Bill, 2012, for providing reservation in promotion, and will vote on the draft legislation Monday.
