Washington : The United States said Wednesday it “deeply regrets” the Russian decision to suspend the Soviet-era arms pact Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe(CFE) and said it is a “wrong decision.”
The United States “deeply regrets” Russia’s decision to suspend implementation of its obligations under the CFE, the State Department said in a statement.
“This ‘suspension,’ which is not provided for under the terms of the CFE Treaty, is the wrong decision,” the statement said.
Russia suspended its obligations under the CFE treaty at midnight Wednesday according to a law signed by President Vladimir Putin.
After the suspension, Russia will temporarily cease to release information and accept inspections, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The suspension also means that Russia will no longer be bound by any limitations on conventional arms and their concrete numbers will depend on the evolution of the military-political situation, the Russian statement added.
