New Delhi: An elderly property consultant was smothered to death at his rented house here Saturday, police said. A missing domestic help is among the suspects.

Vijay Sareen, 72, was found dead in his house in Lajpat Nagar in south Delhi around 11.30 a.m. by his Nepali maid, police said.

“Sareen’s maid, Rani, found his body in the bedroom with the back door open. He lived alone on the ground floor of the building,” said a police officer.

Police said they suspected the hand of one of Sareen’s Nepali servants who was missing. The house was ransacked and few things, including a mobile phone, were missing.

“The suspected servant has been identified,” said Additional Commissioner of Police Ajay Chaudhary.

He said the suspect was employed by Sareen three months ago without any police verification.

Sareen was also not registered in the Delhi Police senior citizen cell. “He was staying here for the last six years but he never got himself registered in the cell,” said Chaudhary.

Police said the widower’s married daughter lived in Dwarka area of west Delhi.
