India has fewer poor now

New Delhi : The government said Wednesday that the number of people below poverty line (BPL) dropped from 4,072.2 lakh in 2004-05 to 3,546.8 lakh in 2009-10.

Minister of State for Planning Rajeev Shukla told the Lok Sabha that the latest figures were not available.

In some states, however, the numbers in BPL category rose, Shukla said in a written statement.

These included Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgah, Delhi, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Uttar Pradesh.
