Musharraf issues orders to revoke emergency rule

By Xinhua

Islamabad : Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf Saturday issued three presidential orders under which the state of emergency was lifted, local TV channel Dawn News reported.

According to the orders, the Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO) had been revoked and the constitution restored, the report said.

The judges who did not take oath under the PCO, which was issued by Musharraf Nov 3, would cease to hold office but still get pension benefits, while other judges have to take oath again after the constitution is restored.

Musharraf imposed a state of emergency in the country Nov 3.

Information Minister Nisar Memon described it as a “historic day”, saying that next month’s parliamentary elections would help the country’s return to democracy.

President Musharraf was to deliver a address to the nation at 1500 GMT.
