Chennai : DMK president M. Karunanidhi Friday urged all sections to make the March 12 general strike a success to put pressure on the central government, calling its response to the plight of Sri Lankan Tamils unsatisfactory.
He urged the central government to announce that rail and air service would be stopped on the day of the strike in Tamil Nadu.
The DMK-backed Tamil Eelam Supporter’s Organisation has called a general strike March 12 from 6 a.m to 6 p.m.
In a letter to party workers, Karunanidhi said: “Even as parties like the BJP and others voiced concern in support of Tamils in parliament, the response of the central government was not to our expectations”.
To give added pressure on the government to understand the plight of the Tamils in the neighbouring country, Karunanidhi said lending cooperation to the one-day strike was the DMK’s duty.
He urged all industrial units, business establishments and others to support the strike and down their shutters.
“Even the Indian government should come forward to announce that rail and air service in Tamil Nadu will be halted that day,” Karunanidhi said.
