BJP questions PM’s reaction to CBI raids

By IANS,

New Delhi : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Friday questioned Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s clarification over CBI raids at DMK leader M.K. Stalin’s house.

“Whatever the prime minister said about the raids raises a big question. We have always been saying that the CBI works on government directions but the prime minister has admitted it,” BJP spokesperson Syed Shahnawaz Hussain said here.

“We are all very upset (at these events). The timing of this (the raids) is most unfortunate. The government had no role in this. We will find out the details,” the prime minister said Thursday.

“Is it that by mistake they sent the CBI team to Chennai instead of to Lucknow,” Hussain said, taking a jibe at the government.

The Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP, which are extending outside support to the government, have their headquarters in Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh.

The BJP leader also said that CBI was working as an adhesive for the government.

“The CBI should stop working like Fevicol (adhesive) for the government. This government is Congress plus allies plus CBI,” Hussain said.

Asked if the BJP would consider bringing a no-confidence motion against the UPA government in parliament, he said: “Our national leadership is monitoring the situation. Our options are open. A decision will be taken at the right time.”

The DMK withdrew support from the Congress government over the issue of Sri Lankan Tamils. The CBI raids at Stalin’s residence Thursday were seen as a reaction to the withdrawal of support.
